BIOGRAPHY: Robert "Elias" and Cosby had 18 children. 16 of those children are listed in this file. 15 of the children are documented.
RESEARCH: Unable to find a Robert Elisha with these dates. This is not necessarily the same as is listed on Cosby Janes card c-30 as that reference has no such dates.
The 1870 cen for New Garden, Russell, Va (p. 521) lists an Elias Ray age 9 as living with what appear to be Isaac and Sally Honaker. Considering Sally is likey Sarah, and their ages appear to be 62 and 61 respectively, it can be assumed that these are maternal grandparents.
There is an Elias Ray (age 21) newlywed to one Cynthia (age 16) in the 1860 cen. New Garden, Russell, VA pg 118. The story is that this Elias was killed at the battle of Kernstown, 23 March 1862 (from H. Greg Poynor LDS PRF Pin 824463).
If Elias (age 9) was born to them, he would have been born a year after they married and a year or so before his father's death in the war making Cynthia 18 and widowed with an infant to raise.
It is porported by Carl Ray and others that Cynthia remarried Henderson Dye (which Henderson is yet unverified). As a young widow such is likely. The mystery is that the 1870 cen shows the family of one Henderson Dye and Cynthia (ages 24 and 23 respectively), with children Catherine (6) Isaac (4) Sally (4) John (3) and Melisa? (1/2). No Elias is listed in the household, bringing us back to Elias (age 9). Was Cynthia's son living with her parent's while she was raising another family of her own? Why would this be?
